Mountain men have always been an important symbol of America's wild frontier.  Beyond being a historic symbol of America's early growth, their role in westward expansion was also very substantial, because they were instrumental in exploring and settling the lands west of the Mississippi and up to Alaska.  We honor these brave, adventurous, and practical men and women who came to the wilderness, raised families, became explorers, guides, and even government officials.
